This is verified to be #81, the aircraft Louise Thaden owned and flew in the years following her win at the Bendix cup along with her copilot Blanche Noyes. Original logbooks, factory order receipts, chain of ownership, historical research, build plans and more come with this aircraft proving that it was Louise Thadens C17R.
The wings and tail have been recovered. The fuselage wood and metal work has been completed. All metal surfaces are sealed with epoxy. The restoration work completed is top of the line. Wings are properly restored with the hidden racing flaps on the underside. Original windshield is intact and has chips from the original Shewin Williams Blue noted on the original order paperwork included.
Restoration is upwards of 65% complete.
Wright 975 - awaiting restoration
The C17R was powered by an air-cooled, supercharged, 971.930-cubic-inch-displacement (15.927 liter) Wright Whirlwind 440 (R-975E3) 9-cylinder direct-drive radial engine with a compression ratio of 6.3:1. The R-975E3 was rated at 420 horsepower at 2,200 r.p.m., and 440 horsepower at 2,250 r.p.m.
